The GROW Model: A 4-Step Process for Structuring Training and Mentoring Sessions

The beginning of any training interaction must begin with a clear purpose. The GROW model is a simple four-step process that helps you structure training and mentoring sessions with team members. This circular model can be easily used in any training environment and can flow in both directions. The most important thing is that it is a model without a clear beginning or end and is by no means linear.

This four-step process includes objectives, planning, instruction, and evaluation. Training employees is the key to creating and maintaining a self-motivated workforce. Initially, more time will be needed: the whole process of teaching a man to fish instead of just catching a man a fish. However, the results are worth the investment.

Employee coaching tends to have two aspects. Either you're training them to improve (or because they're doing something wrong); or you're training them on a new process or topic that requires training. Effective training can build more confidence on both sides and keep the door open to improvement at all times. A coaching relationship is not intended to be instructive and focuses solely on the employee's business development.

If you're not prepared to invest your time, resources, and skills to train a person, you're unlikely to succeed. The best coaches find the best way to train and inspire the team to move in the desired direction. When a coach uses this 4-step coaching process in their coaching sessions, they'll have more effective coaching sessions, drive client results, and encourage change. Coaches must use useful and powerful questions, training tools, training techniques, feedback and teaching concepts to get results for their clients. Successful training guides employees in the right direction, but promotes independent thinking and team collaboration to overcome obstacles.
